1 to 1 Sessions

One to one sessions allow for a greater focus on the specific needs of the individual. This is particularly beneficial when someone is recovering from an injury or has simply been carrying niggles that never seem to heal and this kind of rehabilitation work is an area of expertise of mine. One to one and small groups can also be helpful for people who want to train in their own homes.
Prices
Day classes: £12
Evening classes: £14
One to one and Small Groups: £60
All sessions are 1 hour.

Welcome

Justina in handstandHi, I’m Justina and teaching Pilates has been a part of my life for over 20 years.

The first time I tried it was by accident; I misread the timetable on the gym notice board thinking I was joining a spin class and when I entered the room everyone was preparing their mats to lie down! However, I joined the class and although I found it very challenging, it also felt good and I left the class knowing I’d found something wonderful. Within a short period of doing Pilates, I noticed a change in the way I walked, sat down and moved whilst performing other physical activities; my legs were lighter and my whole body was considerably stronger. I felt good in myself; so much so that I chose to make it a bigger part of my life by becoming a Pilates instructor.

I studied at The Pilates Institute, London under Michael King and successfully qualified in mat work and studio (equipment) Pilates. Whilst studying, I was also training to attain my First Dan (Black Belt) in Shotokan Karate and with the heavy demands this placed on my body, Pilates had become my daily healing balm. I noticed that however tired my body felt from karate, I still had the energy to do a Pilates sequence and felt wonderful from doing it. And 20 years on, I still feel the same. In fact, I feel even better for seeing how the people I teach also experience these benefits and I never cease to be excited by helping people achieve more than they thought possible.

It’s important to me that everyone feels confident with each move and gains a clear understanding of how they should be transitioning from one pose to another. Consequently, my classes are small to allow me the time to adjust everyone’s postures and keep them safe. My style of teaching is fun, creative and I love to encourage a supportive community within my classes.

Hamstrings

Hamstrings…. Some Pilates postures, well actually rather a lot, call on the hamstring stretching . For those with long hamstrings these postures can be a doddle, but for those with short or rather tight hamstring this makes for a different story.
Let’s use the classic single leg stretch, yes, very graceful and a breeze for long ones, but for those with short hamstrings the move can feel like you’re imitating a new born foal (That’s a quote from a student!). But there’s beauty in this pose for short Hammies, do not be discouraged, if anything do this posture more, yes more! For while in it, if being done correctly, as you move your legs in the scissors motion, you are also lengthening the back muscles and strengthening your core “powerhouse” which, in time, will be a big part in stabilising your hips which will bring freedom in the Hammies and before you know it you’ll be doing the posture with ease! Xx

Core strength

Core. It’s the big word now, and through the amazing sports technology we now have,  we know that for a healthy body a strong core is vital …
But to Joseph Pilates (Pilates Founder) it was already obvious. He was teaching his students as early as 1925 that every movement begins from the centre.
With deep concentration to draw in the belly and keep it held gently and a deep focus on the breath working to expanding the ribs sideways. Not easy, but once practised enough to feel the body work this way, the feeling is powerful and the depth to these core muscle is powerful , and that’s why Joseph Pilates had another name for “the core”, and this is the terminology used in Pilates , “The Powerhouse”.

Praise

I first met Justina in 2007 to train in Pilates in order to treat a chronic balance issue which the medical profession could not help me with.
Within weeks I felt more stable, embodied and my symptoms were relieved.
I have continued to work with Justina ever since , both in a 1-1 and class setting.
My strength, flexibility and general fitness has grown enormously.
She is a sensitive and creative teacher, who by treating all her students as individuals, enables them to reach their physical potential .

I have been working with Justina for over 12 years, concentrating on flexibility, strength and stamina in our Pilates sessions.
In December 2017 I seriously injured my knee and shoulder in an accident which the medical profession said I was unlikely to recover from, and would also need an operation. I worked with Justina to rehabilitate these injuries which now are almost fully recovered.
The depth of her compassionate teaching reaches into your soul so that you can heal your body.

I have been consistently working with Justina for 6 months now in a combination of group classes and 1:1 sessions and the impact has been utterly transformative. My core strength and flexibility have improved tremendously accompanied by a noticeable improvement in my general fitness. What I appreciate about Justina is her in-depth knowledge of physiology and the way she is able to identify the specific muscle groups that require strengthening and/or an increased range of movement. There is a purity and a precision to her exercises that have been core to my rehabilitation from injury. Her knowledge of Pilates is second to none and I can thoroughly recommend her.

I have known Justina for almost twenty years and have no hesitation in recommending her as one of the best Pilates teachers around. She actually follows the teaching of Joseph Pilates which many so-called Pilates teachers do not. She is always cheerful and brings a ray of sunshine into the room whenever she teaches. Her classes are challenging but fun! Most importantly she gives a lot of attention to individuals and ensures that she takes account of their capablilites and any physical problems.

I have been working with Justina for many years and have been on an incredible journey. Although I was pretty fit when we first started I quickly realised I had much to learn and have gone from strength to strength, quite literally. I now have greater flexibility and stronger core muscles than I have ever had in my life and the best bit is that I am still improving. My sessions with Justina are so rewarding and she helps me to continually progress while also taking account of any niggles that I might be experiencing as life gets in the way. Best of all, we spend lots of time laughing!

I have been doing Pilates with Justina in a group and on a one-on-one basis for many years. The benefits are well known but for me these include better breathing, flexibility, skeletal alignment and balance.
Justina, however, adds something extra. On a one-on-one basis, she tailors the session to individual requirements and where appropriate she will introduce weights and other strengthening aids. In a group session, her sympathetic approach means that she can treat each of the people in a group of ten as if they were having a one-on-one. Knowing each client’s strengths and weakness she can always find alternative movements to help them benefit from each exercise. The sessions are fun!
